Say HELLO! to Jay Brockman.

Mangoose Records co-founder Jay Brockman is not your typical American singer-songwriter. Born in the Bayou City and raised in Latin America he brings a unique cultural, spiritual, and sometimes maniacal (in a good way, really) perspective to Mangoose. From kitchen spoons to a fuzzy digital guitar processor to Casio keyboards, Jay is a master at creating rich organic musical pieces using whatever tools he has at his disposal. His first solo work, Josh's Beginning is legendary within some circles. (If you have a copy, please contact us because it's incredibly rare!) Jay is one of the most widely represented artists in the Mangoose catalog, having left his mark on over seven releases. His last solo effort, Homogeneous, is a spectacular journey into the depths the man's psyche. A real headphone masterpiece indeed. Here is a free track off Homogeneous for your listening pleasure:

Say "NO!" to the Orphaned Rights Bill!

So the 110th U.S. Congress is once again looking to undermine our freedom of artistic expression and our god-given right to make music, and OWN the music WE CREATED.

It's called the "Orphaned Works" bill, and basically what happens is, if passed, will allow big corporations like Time Warner, or Sony to seek out and claim "orphaned works." An orphaned work is basically any song, photo, movie, painting etc. that isn't registered with the U.S. government. Registering a work costs money, which can be hard to come by for indie artists! All anyone has to do to claim these "orphaned works" is say they performed an "unsuccessful, but reasonable search to locate the author of the work" and bam! They get the copyright. Which means, if you, as an artist, write a song, upload it to the net, maybe 5 years later it gets passed around, you forget about it, Time Warner finds it, performs a "reasonable search" claims the copyright, and gets it...that's it, you no longer have any right to use YOUR OWN CREATION!!! Nor will you be compensated when your song is used on next week's episode of the Surreal Life.

gross, and unfair!!!

Here is a link about the bill:

North by North Park - 8.2.08

The first ever North by North Park (North Park is a neighborhood in San Diego, CA) took place at the Lafayette Hotel. The conference was followed by music showcases at perhaps 20 venues in and around North Park, featuring over 80 bands, djs, emcees, and singer-songwriters.

The Moviegoers played a showcase at the Whistle Stop Bar in South Park. A great time was had by all...on the way back home to NP, we passed by mad numbers of people out and about, a lot of them with NXNP wristbands. I hope it was a success for the organizers, and that they get geared up to do it again next year!

Yes, it's time for another "Featured Track." Today we bring you a snippet of time filled with music, by Mangoose's very own Raúl Picaporte. The song is "Pet Rock" the album is Exploring Fantasies. It's killer how short this song is, in a way, but also part of what makes it brilliant. "Pet Rock" is a favorite of mine (sigh, I have many off Exploring Fantasies) and if you catch the Moviegoers playing out some time, chances are you'll get to hear a version of this masterful ditty. Mangoose is currently prepping a re-release of Raúl's Exploring Fantasies, due out in the coming months.
